Description of airport lighting systems:

An airport lighting system, or ALS, is a lighting system installed on the approach end of an airport runway and consisting of a series of lightbars, strobe lights, or a combination of the two that extends outward from the runway end.

If you’ve been to any major airport at night, you’ve probably noticed that there are a lot of different kinds of lights, ranging from flashing white or yellow to steady red, green, and blue. Airport lighting is essential for aircraft operating at night.

Airport lighting systems can be divided into different types: General airport lighting, taxiway lighting, runway lighting, and visual glideslope indicators.

Airport Lighting Requirements:

This AC contains the FAA standards for the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) systems, which provides pilots with visual glideslope guidance during approach for landing. Effective six months after the issue date of this AC, only that equipment qualified in accordance with the specifications herein will be listed in accordance with AC 150/5345-53, Airport Lighting Equipment Certification Program.
